JEC Decision Pushes Back SA Election Process

From the Joint Election Committee's website:

"The Joint Elections Committee will hold two additional registration days next week, Tuesday the 16th and Wednesday the 17th. Candidates can turn in their registration forms on either of those two days between 10AM and 5PM in Old Fedex.


Ballot Statements (candidate bio’s) will be due by 5PM on Wednesday the 17th. The Candidate’s meeting will be held on Thursday the 18th at 8PM, and Postering Day will be Friday the 19th. More information will be posted on the Candidates section of this website as we come closer to Postering Day."

The shortened campaign period could also have the potential to lead to more violations as candidates may be tempted to prematurely campaign.  Although the campaign period is very short this year, WRGW News will still have in-depth coverage, analysis and more polling on the current state of the race.

So far, Jason Lifton and Xochitl Sanchez have announced their candidacies for SA President, and Logan Dobson, Josh Goldstein, and Rob Maxim have announced their bids to become Executive Vice President.

BREAKING: Josh Goldstein Running for EVP

CCAS Senator Josh Goldstein has entered the EVP race against Logan Dobson, and he has his own facebook group and website.

Goldstein writes on his website that "the current state of the SA is unacceptable," a theme that is likely to be similar to Dobson's candidacy.  

Goldstein was appointed as a freshman SA senator last year, and won a CCAS seat last Februrary in a hotly contested race against 16 candidates for only 6 spots.  He ironically finished second - to Logan Dobson. 

Dobson had 586 votes compared to Goldstein's 537.

Logan Dobson Running for EVP

Current CCAS undergraduate SA Senator Logan Dobson is running for SA executive vice president according to a blog post on Inside the SA.

Dobson will likely face fellow CCAS Senator Josh Goldstein in a competitive election.

As for the latest election rumors this morning, Michael Komo is unlikely to run for either SA president or EVP, although nothing is out of question at this point. If Komo decides not to run, Lifton will be a virtual shoo-in due to his high name recognition, unless challenged by another high profile SA insider.

DC Snowmaggedon Part II

The National Weather Service is predicting anywhere from 16 to 24 inches of snow from Friday morning to Saturday night.  The brunt of the storm will start Friday night, and get progressively worse into Saturday morning.  The heavy snowfall will undoubtedly put a  damper on people's weekend plans as sidewalks will be inaccessible and public transportation will be likely closed well into next week.

GW students might want to start stocking up on food as soon as possible, but might see huge lines at places like Trader Joe's and Safeway, setting up the perfect stage for a massive food shortage on Super Bowl weekend.

However, this is the perfect weekend to have a gigantic snowball fight, catch up on reading and homework, and make some delicious homemade hot chocolate (we here at WRGW prefer Ina Garten's recipe).

White House Conference Call with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan

In a conference call with college media organizations including WRGW News, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan stressed the importance for America's children to go to college in order to move the nation forward in the 21st century, stating that "economic security depends on education."

Duncan emphasized America's college completion rates, saying the White House has a "laser-like focus on improving college completion rate - only 40% of our children complete college, that not enough."  Duncan said that although the 40% rate was the envy of the world just a decade ago, America is now well behind other competitive countries.

Duncan also described the 'Income Based Repayment' system, created to reduce the burden of college loan payments.  IRP institutes a loan repayment cap of 10% on a former student's income, and the debt would be forgiven after 20 years.  However, for student entering the public sector, the loans would be forgiven after only 10 years, which Duncan said is incentive "to bring talent into the public sector.  Duncan believes 1 million teachers are needed in the next 5-8 years and that Obama's latest education proposals will cumulate as the "biggest investment in education since the G.I. Bill."

Josh Goldstein Running for Executive Vice President?

Sophomore SA Senator Josh Goldstein (CCAS) has all but officially announced his campaign to become the next SA Executive Vice President.  Inside the SA (Logan Dobson) posted this letter that Goldstein allegedly sent to various student organizations, a very clear signal he will be running for EVP.

Dear [Name of student organization],

Hello, my name is Josh Goldstein and I am a Student Association Senator representing the Columbian College. I am reaching out to you because I want to learn more about the student organization that you lead, [name of student organization].  More specifically, I would love the opportunity to sit down with you to learn about the organization, its programming, and to discuss ways that the SA can work with you in the upcoming year. 

I think it is crucial that we get to know each other so that we can work together to help you reach the goals that you have set for your organization and utilize the SA's funds and relationship with the GW Administration to provide a better experience for you and your members.  As an SA Senator, I feel that it is my responsibility work both for you and with you to find ways for the SA to help your organization succeed.  Feel free to contact me via email at XXXXX@.com.
