Celebrating 278 Years of George Washington

At most schools, students, administration, and faculty alike wouldn’t think to celebrate their founder’s birthday.

But then again, none of those schools can count our nation’s first President as their founder.

Monday night the Continental Ballroom was host to a fife and drum band, Senior VP Robert Chernak, 6 cherry-pie-eating contestants, and a few dozen students to celebrate George Washington’s 278th birthday. The event, moved inside because of the rain, featured said pie-eating contest and the announcement of the finalists for the Mr. GW and Ms. GW contestants.

The GW Men’s Basketball team and a few members of the Women’s Basketball team were also on hand to wish Mr. President a happy birthday. Senior Damian Hollis addressed the crowd, telling them to come to the team’s last home games of the season coming up in the next few weeks. His reminder that these would be his own last home games at GW drew a few saddened cries.

Goody bags were abundant at the sparsely-attended bash. Inside were slightly stale marshmallows, a stick of chocolate, and pre-wrapped graham crackers to virtually roast by the virtual bonfire raging on a screen on the far side of the room. This marks the third time in four years that George Washington’s birthday has been moved due to weather.

GW isn’t the only local institution honoring George Washington’s birthday. A GW Birthday Classic 10K is held annually in Alexandria, Virginia. Their event was actually canceled this year due to the snow that demobilized the city for days.

GW Women’s Basketball Takes on No. 6/5 Tennessee, Listen to the Action Live

The George Washington women's basketball team wraps up week-long road trip Tuesday in Knoxville where they'll take on the Lady Volunteers. WRGW Sports' Julian Gompertz and Perry Goldman will bring you the game live on gwradio.com.

Highlights From Last Season's Game Against Tennessee

On Friday the Women's team lost 78-47 to No. 25 Michigan State. Freshman Danni Jackson suffered a broken leg in the loss.

Game recap:

GW (2-4) falls 94-54 to the mighty Lady Vols (6-0) of Tennessee. This marks the team's worst loss since January 13, 1990 when they withstood a 96-52 punishment to the Penn State Nittany Lions. Despite a stellar start to the game, GW could not contain Tennessee's depth as they went on a 29-6 run midway through the first half to establish a comfortable 54-24 lead at the half. Tennessee was led by Alyssia Brewer's 23 points, 15 of which came in the second half. Glory Johnson and Shekinna Stricklen each had double doubles in the first half to take control of the game.

GW's one bright spot throughout the game was the play of Kay-kay Allums who had a career-high 16 points on 5 of 11 shooting with a perfect 5 of 5 coming from the charity stripe. Tiana Myers and Megan Nipe joined Allums in double figures with 11 points each, most of which came late in the second half.

GW's brutal road stretch comes to a close on Saturday against another SEC team, the Auburn Tigers (4-3). The action can be heard right here on WRGW, gwradio.com, starting at 1:40 for a 2 pm tip. Evan Waxman and Ryan Brumley will have the call.

Kim Beck Is Back!

The Seattle Storm announced today that they are signing Kim Beck for the rest of the season. Beck was selected by the Storm as the 36th draft pick and played 15 games before being released from their roster on June 28th.

Beck was a senior leader for George Washington on last year's Sweet Sixteen team and was named A10 Player of the Year. The Atlanta, Georgia, native averaged 12.8 points and 6.2 assists per game her senior season.
