Breaking: White House Shooting Suspect Arrested

A suspect in Friday's White House shooting is now in police custody.

Police arrested Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, 21, this afternoon in connection to the shooting. Two bullets struck the White House, one cracking a window in the Obama family living quarters, the Secret Service said Tuesday.

President Obama was traveling to a summit in Hawaii at the time. No injuries have been reported.

The Secret Service discovered an assault rifle registered to Ortega-Henandez on Friday, minutes after hearing shots fired near the White House. ABC7/TBD reports that Ortega's family in Idaho Falls, Idaho reported him missing on Oct. 31. He has an arrest record in three states, according to U.S. Park Police.

BREAKING NEWS: GW Students Safely Out of Egypt

In a statement released early Monday evening, GW officials said that five GW students studying abroad in Egypt for the spring semester have arrived safely in Athens. Others are currently en route to various locations in Europe.

Cairo and other Egyptian cities have been in a state of chaos for the past week, when large-scale protests against police brutality, lack of free elections and free speech, and other political and legal issues were first organized by the April 6th Youth Movement. Since then the movement has grown considerably, with more than 250,000 Egyptians currently rallying in downtown Cairo according to Al Jazeera. Multiple fatalities have been reported since last week.

A curfew is currently in affect in Cairo from 3 p.m. to 8 a.m., making flight arrangements difficult. According to the university's press statement, GW students who are still in Cairo have flight information and transportation arrangements to the airport.

The university has vowed to work with the students misplaced by Egypt's unrest to arrange alternative study abroad options for the rest of the semester.

Richard Holbrooke Dies at GW Hospital

The veteran American diplomat Richard Holbrooke has died at GW hospital. Holbrooke, who played a major role in every American foreign policy engagement since the Vietnam War, was in hospital due to complications from a collapsed aorta suffered earlier in the week. The diplomat had remained in critical condition after over 20 hours of surgery Saturday, and succumbed to his injuries Sunday evening.

Holbrook, perhaps best known for negotiating the Dayton accords ending the Bosnian conflict in 1995, was in Washington working in his capacity as special envoy to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. He began to experience medial difficulties during a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and as quickly rushed to the hospital.

Ambassador Holbrooke was 69 years old.

BREAKING NEWS: SA to Propose New Constitution

The SA task force that was created to look into the possibility of proposing a revised SA Constitution has done just that.

There are three major changes proposed.  The first involves a new role for the Executive Vice President, who would focus more on executive issues, and would be elected on a ticket with the SA President.

The second major change introduces the position of "Senate Speaker" who "would serve as the impartial presiding officer of the SA Senate," according to an SA press release.

The third major change would remove the three positions of non-voting freshmen senators and replace it with a "freshman caucus" to garner more participation from interested members of the freshman class.

"This Constitution is the product of months of hard work, dedication and reflects the views of both people within the SA and ordinary students. I really think that we’ve created a much clearer document that will refocus the Student Association on its core mission of advocacy," stated SA Rules Committee Chairman Jamie Baker in the press release.

The task force will be holding a town hall meeting next Wednesday, November 4th in Marvin Center room 405 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, and a followup town hall meeting the following night.  The last town hall meeting hosted by the SA on September 10th of this year resulted in no actual students attending besides members of the SA and the campus media, so it is unclear what impact or usefulness the town hall meetings will serve.
