I believe that if you really want change, then you must be actively involved in creating that change. This is why I’m running for the position of ESIA Senator because I want student life to change for the better here at GW."

SEAS SA Senate Candidates' Overview

by Myles Goldman

On Wednesday, March 20th and Thursday March 21st GW students will be voting for representatives in the Student Association, Marvin Center Governing Board, and Programming Board.  This article is part of a series WRGW News is conducting giving an overview of the competitive races.

One of the competitive races is the Undergraduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS).  In this race three candidates are running for one seat.  WRGW News encourages you to look at the candidates' websites for more information.

Neil Forquer

Year: 2014, Civil Engineering

Top Priorities: Making sure SEAS student organizations are prepared for SA Financial allocations and creating a program that helps engineering students deal and cope with stress and problems specific to SEAS

"I see this position as a way of giving back to SEAS and GWU as a whole. With that being said, I make it my personal goal to ensure that engineering student orgs have everything they need from the SA for events, and that they are prepared for the allocations process during that specific time of the year.  Also, I see this spot as being an ambassadorship for SEAS to the other schools in the University.  Over the course of the past year, I've enjoyed meeting new people in the SA and working with them as a way of bridging the gap between SEAS and the other schools."

by Sam Michel

The upcoming Student Association elections will feature several competitive races, including the Columbian College Undergraduate Senate election, which features 16 candidates running for 6 seats. Below are a list of the candidates, a brief description about them and their top priorities if elected to the SA Senate. WRGW News encourages you to visit the candidates’ websites and Facebook pages to learn more about their platforms.

Shreya Chaturvedi

Year: 2016, Psychology

Top Priorities: Safe transportation, increasing access to student health services

My top priority in the election is bringing students’ issues to light. More than pushing personal initiatives as a Senator, I plan on representing Columbian students as best as I can.”

Jevin Hodge

Year: 2016

Top Priorities: Student space, student life, safety, academic modernization

“"GW is elevating at a rapid pace; with an environment of such great ability and even greater potential we have to galvanize campus rapport and take a step in the right direction. Work to create a streamlined and better process for communicating with the allocations and co-sponsorship so all clubs will know what is expected of them.”

Nick Gumas

Top Priorities: Expanding GPAC requirements, enacting non-discrimination legislation, lowering cost of printing

“ I am the only candidate in the race with experience as a SA senator, and I hope to use that experience next year to continue bettering the lives of CCAS students through building off of these initiatives and working on new ones, such as increasing diversity in student government, promoting sexual education, improving resources for smaller student organizations."

Benjamin Pryde

Year, Major: 2016, Econoimcs/Political Science

Top Priorities: Student Safety, Sustainability, Vern Issues, Students Clubs/Organizations, GW Living

"I am running because I believe that students deserve a University where their needs academically and socially are met, and a Student Association that ensures that students' needs and aspirations are not forgotten and are made a priority.”

Justyna Felusiak

As a third year student and experienced student leader, I can bring something new and fresh to the SA while still bringing the experience of working with GW administrators to the table.”

 Ahrim Nam

Year, Major: 2016, Political Science/Spanish

Top Priorities: Extending dining hours, Student Health

Patrick Furbush

Marvin Center Governing Board (MCGB) Election Overview

by Sam Michel

As part of WRGW News’ ongoing coverage of the upcoming SA elections, we are previewing the competitive races. Today we take a look at the Marvin Center Governing Board race, where 9 candidates are running to fill 4 open seats. Below is an overview of the candidates, their platforms and their top priorities if elected. We encourage you to look to their campaign websites for further details about their candidacy.

Usama Khan

Year, Major: 2014, Economics/Finance

Top Priorities: Modifying J Street, redesigning the couch areas, making it easier for student orgs to book space

GW has given me so many opportunities over the last 3 years, which I have seized with both hands. After taking so much from this school, I think it is time to give something back.
I have always loved the Marvin Center. It is our student center, but I do not believe it is currently being used to its full potential. That is something I want to change. I plan on lobbying the board and fighting for student space, for the building to be more environmentally sustainable, and for making the Marvin Center feel more like a second home for students.”

Shelby Goodfriend

Year, Major: 2014, Interior Architecture & Design

Top Priorities: Making board members accessible to student orgs, increasing MCGB transparency

My main priority is for MCGB to be a resource to students. This means posted office hours when elected board members can meet with organizations, transparency regarding student office space allocations and the student dining board as well as posting minutes about our meetings so students know what MCGB is actually doing.”

Paul Organ

Year, Major: 2014, Economics/Mathematics

Top Priorities: Transparency, efficiency, publicity

“I want to encourage more contact between the MCGB and news organizations like the Hatchet and GW Today, as well as expanding MCGB's presence on social media sites (specifically Twitter and Facebook) so students understand more of what MCGB is doing.”

John Paul Koenigs

Year, Major: 2015, International Affairs/Political Science

“The Marvin Center could be so much more than it is - it could be a place that makes every Colonial proud. We all have our own hopes and goals for the Marvin Center, I want to be in a position to hear your hopes, and help make real changes to our student experience”

Graham I. Rabinowitsch

Year, Major: 2014, Organizational Science/Political Science

Top Priorities: MCGB accessibility, collaboration with the SA, RHA and student organizations, advocating for student space

I am running for Marvin Center Governing Board because I feel that I can bring my experience in advocacy initiatives and collaborative activities to MCGB in order to revitalize the board, serve as an effective advocate for students, allocate office and storage space to student orgs based on need, and support student-centered programming.”

Ian Ceccarelli
